Political Parties and politicians

The political party I selected is the Democratic party. Democrats often relate more to the beliefs on the left side; because of this they support equality for all and believe in government action to achieve this. As opposed to the main opposing side, Republicans who support limited government.

The politician I chose was Donald Trump, He is the current president of the United States. Donald Trump identifies as a Republican.

article I

The artifact I’m analyzing for the Democratic party is on the Democrats.org website and under the “Fixing our broken immigration system”.  This article shows that Democrats support immigrants and their stay in the United States. Democrats believe that immigrants deserve healthcare, labor laws, and equal treatment.

Article II

The artifact I’m analyzing for my politician is, a transcript from a speech by Donald Trump that is on “The Washington Post”. This speech by Donald Trump happened before he was elected president.

ARTICLE I

While browsing the Democrat.org website the area regarding Democrats opinion on immigration is titled, “Fixing our Broken Immigration System”, off the bat you can already assume the information is going to support one side. The writers of this sectiondemocrat state that Democrats point of view is that immigrants are good and that they should be equally represented in the United States. A chunk of the section says, “And that is why Democrats believe immigration is not just a problem to be solved, it is a defining aspect of the American character and our shared history… we need to urgently fix our broken immigration system—which tears families apart and keeps workers in the shadows” (Fixing our Broken). These two sentences show Democrats stance on immigration and how they support the stay of them in the U.S. This section also shows the support of immigrants and states how they are a large part of our history, and it’s unfair of them to have to live in constant fear of deportation.

The Democrat.org website is an official website that represents’ democratic beliefs. In this article they briefly touch upon the opposing side. Speaking about both sides strengthens the point of view of the article.  Mexican Immigrants, for example, are often thought to be dangerous to the community. Some Republicans believe Immigrants will bring harm to the United States which is one of the reasons they don’t want immigrants in the U.S. The president of the United States, for example, he said this about Mexican immigrants: “they’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists”(Trump). When someone with such influence in the United States says thing’s like this it can misinform people’s views on immigrants. The Democrats.org section about immigration talks about this issue they said, “We believe immigration enforcement must be humane and consistent with our values. We should prioritize those who pose a threat to the safety of our communities, not hardworking families who are contributing to their communities.” (Fixing our Broken) This quote shows democrats support of immigration enforcement, with certain limits; but believes it should be mainly focused on unsafe people rather than innocent families. The Democrat.org website focuses well on___  the opposing opinion. This added to the credibility of the source. A limitation of the point of view for this section is that there is not a stated author or authors, it’s mainly just information about the Democratic parties beliefs on immigration. This makes it hard to see the biased of the authors point of view, and their political socialization which plays a large roll in their opinion

The immigration sections from Democrats.org is mostly facts, but will use pathos to convince the audience. The third paragraph says, “More than 11 million people are living in the shadows, migration bureaucracy is full of backlogs that result in U.S. citizens waiting for decades to be reunited with family members, and green card holders waiting for years to be reunited with their spouses and minor children. The current quota system discriminates against certain immigrants, including immigrants of color, and needs to be reformed to the realities of the 21st century. “(Fixing our Broken). When they write “waiting decades to be reunited with family members,” it is meant to provoke sadness and pity in the reader to understand the pain these immigrants face, and why the immigration system needs to be “fixed”. The next part of the quote says , “green card holders waiting for years to be reunited with their spouses and minor children.”( Fixing our Broken) is ounce again pathos. Many times people don’t realize the difficulty of attaining a green card. To help better educate people they used pathos to make the reader more willing to understand. when they say, “years to be reunited with their minor children”(Fixing our broken). Is to make readers whom have children or have young family members, and to help them realize that once the person may or may not obtain their green card, their children may not be minors anymore

donald-trump

While searching for my politician I picked Donald Trump who identifies with the Republican Party. For my artifact with my politician, I chose a transcript from one of Donald Trump’s speeches about immigration. Trump’s point of view on immigration is not positive, he believes they should not be allowed here without going through the U.S citizenship process. Donald Trump’s view on immigrants is the complete opposite of the view on the Democrats.org website. Donald Trump has prejudice views on Mexicans immigrants. He believes that they’re all “bad” he stated,  “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people who have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. ” (Donald Trump). This quote shows his point of view on immigrants, he believes that all Mexican immigrants bring crime, drugs, and are rapists. His point of view on Mexican immigrants is negative, he clearly doesn’t want them here. Another quick quote he said was, “…can’t get jobs. We can’t get jobs because there are no jobs because China has our jobs and Mexico has our jobs. They all have jobs.”. In this quote, Trump is talking about Chinese and Mexican immigrants and how they’ve “taken all the jobs”. He believes that if the United States was free of immigrants the whole country would be employed.  This shows another negative point of view on immigrants staying in the United States.

This source clearly shows Donald Trump’s point of view, but it has limitations. This speech is mainly talking about immigration and the negative effects of it on the U.S, although not once does he mention the positive effects or their history within the U.S. “…They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people. . .  It only makes common sense. They’re sending us not the right people.” (Donald Trump). This is only the “positive” comment Trump made upon immigrants and it’s hardly a positive comment. Immigrants have made a large positive impact on the United States the U.S Department of Treasury said, “Immigrant workers also increase the affordability and availability of services such as childcare, cleaning services, and gardening. These services in turn increase standards of living and free up time for consumers to devote to alternative economic activity”(John Bellows). This quote shows the small impact immigrants contribute to the U.S, some jobs they obtain increase the U.S’s living standards. Donald Trump does not mention any of the positive attributes immigrants bring to the U.S in his speech, he only mentioned his exaggerated opinion on them.

Donald Trump’s point of view on immigrants is affected by his political socialization. His political socialization aims him towards the right side of government. Donald comes from a wealthy family which is just one of the reasons he’s come to believe what he does. Normally the more money you make the more “Republican” you fall on the spectrum of politics. Parents are a huge contributor to someone’s political ideology,  there are multiple counts where Donald Trump’s father Fred Trump has been racist towards

people. Heavy.com stated, “Fred Trump was once sued by the U.S. Justice Department for refusing to rent his apartment to black people.” Donald Trump has had incidents exactly like his fathers with his hotels. Donald growing up seeing his father act in certain ways made his political ideology the way it is now. His father had one set idea of keeping out black people from his apartments, while Donald wants Mexicans out of the United States.

The Democratic party and Donald Trump both have different ideas on how to handle immigrants in the U.S.. Donald Trump believes that immigrants should be sent back. In the speech Trump says, “I will immediately terminate President Obama’s illegal executive order on immigration, immediately.”(Donald Trump) A large part of Obamas executive order on immigration was to expand DACA, which he did. Daca is a program that helps immigrants who have arrived to the United States as children, this is their home even though they’re not legally here.

As Trump’s quote says he wants to terminate Obama’s work because he believes that even if an immigrant has been here since a young age, they should come back when they have their papers. The Democratic Party has a different view on immigrants, they believe they should be allowed The Democrat.org website said, “And while we continue to fight for comprehensive immigration reform, we will defend and implement President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans executive actions to help DREAMers, parents of citizens, and lawful permanent residents avoid deportation”( Fixing Our Broken). This quote clearly shows the Democratic Party as being in support with DACA and the stay of Dreamers in the U.S. These two quotes from Donald trump, and the Democratic Party both clearly show their different point of views on deportation.

How might political parties and politicians influence an individual’s political beliefs? How might they influence an individual’s voting behavior?

Political parties and politicians can add to a persons political socialization, which will then effect their voting behavior. For example a person stumbling across the Donald Trump speech may listen to him and realize that everything he is saying makes sense to them and then support him. The more this person researches they may end up realizing that they highly identify with Donald Trumps beliefs which align to Republicans beliefs; this will lead them to identify as Republican and then vote for a like-minded candidate. This can also happen with a Political Party, If a political party is spreading their beliefs around your school or town someone may identify with their beliefs and then agree to identify as a Democrat.
